Research Activities at the Museum

Our Museum archaeologists have been involved in site investigations across Long Island since the 1920’s.  Many important ancient Native American site artifacts are on permanent display at the Museum. We are currently converting our library into a research resource for archaeologists.

We welcome collaborations with other institutions regarding aspects of our artifacts.  A few examples of our current research through the SPARK program at BNL’s NSLS II include:

• Investigating varnished rocks on Long Island and their possible use in geoarchaeology
• A survey of clay provenance for Woodlands era ceramics across Long Island
• A provenance study of the soapstone in our collection of Archaic steatite pots
• Identification and digitization of past and recently acquired artifacts
